Brooke Slusser Speaks Out on Trans Athlete Investigation
A former San Jose State University volleyball player is calling out what she believes is systemic bias in college sports. Brooke Slusser, a former SJSU standout, reacted sharply after reports revealed that the Mountain West Conference used the same law firm to investigate and defend a transgender athlete, Blaire Fleming, in a legal battle over eligibility.
The controversy centers on allegations that Fleming and another Colorado State player conspired to injure Slusser during a match. While those claims were investigated by the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher (WFG), the same firm was simultaneously representing the conference in a court case to defend Fleming’s eligibility.
“They’re Backing the Male Athlete”
In an interview on Fox News Channel’s “America Reports,” Slusser didn’t hold back. “There’s so much bias in this situation… Title IX was built to protect women, and they’re obviously deciding to protect the man in this situation,” she said. Slusser argued that using the same firm to investigate and defend the athlete in court undermined the credibility of the entire process.
Fleming was cleared within three days and went on to lead San Jose State to the Mountain West Championship game. But Slusser claims her senior season was “ruined” due to the controversy.
Lawsuit and Title IX Scrutiny Add Pressure
The fallout has extended beyond just SJSU Volleyball. William Bock, the attorney representing 11 current or former conference women’s athletes, has filed a lawsuit against the school and conference. His criticism came shortly after a White House statement hinted at broader national debate on transgender participation in sports.
Slusser’s final hope? “The goal is to never have to let another female athlete go through what I did,” she said.
