New York Liberty Dealt with Major Injury Blow

Liberty Lose Jonquel Jones to Injury, Sabrina Ionescu Must Step Up

The New York Liberty bounced back in the win column Tuesday after their first loss of the season, taking down the Atlanta Dream 86-81. But while momentum was on their side entering Thursday’s matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, the Liberty suffered a big blow early in the game.

Star center and five-time All-Star Jonquel Jones went down hard after attempting a layup in the second quarter, visibly in pain as she grabbed her right leg. Though she managed to walk off under her own power, the Liberty quickly ruled her out with a right ankle injury. The same issue that had sidelined her for two games earlier this season.

Injury Raises Concerns for Upcoming Stretch

Jones’ status is now up in the air for the Liberty’s Sunday matchup against the Seattle Storm. That’s a major concern for a team with championship aspirations. The 2021 WNBA MVP has been averaging 13.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and contributing as a defensive anchor.

With Jones out, the spotlight now shifts to Sabrina Ionescu, who will be expected to carry more of the offensive and leadership load. Ionescu has already been crucial to the team’s early 10–1 start, but her role may expand even more depending on Jones’ recovery timeline.

Can Ionescu Keep the Liberty Rolling?

While the win against Phoenix was encouraging, the Liberty now face uncertainty. Jonquel Jones is a game-changer on both ends of the floor, and losing her for any stretch of time could test the depth and grit of this title-hungry squad. If there’s one player who can steady the ship, it’s Sabrina Ionescu, who’s no stranger to carrying a team through tough stretches.

Stay tuned for updates on Jones’ injury status as New York prepares for a challenging weekend matchup.
