WNBA Upgrades Marina Mabrey’s Foul on Caitlin Clark to Flagrant-2.

In the aftermath of a tense and physical matchup between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun, the WNBA has reportedly upgraded Marina Mabrey’s foul on Caitlin Clark to a Flagrant-2, according to a source who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Mabrey had originally received a technical foul for shoving Clark to the ground during a third-quarter skirmish. The league’s decision now makes the foul automatically subject to a fine, although the WNBA does not disclose the specific amounts.

No Further Suspensions Issued, But Fines Handed Out

Along with Mabrey’s upgraded penalty, the league has also fined Indiana’s Sophie Cunningham, who committed a hard foul on Jacy Sheldon with under a minute to play. Cunningham was assessed a Flagrant-2 during the game and ejected. According to the AP source, no additional suspensions or punishments will follow for any players involved.

This incident was the culmination of rising tension throughout the game. It began when Sheldon poked Clark in the eye during tight coverage, prompting Clark to push back. That’s when Mabrey charged in and knocked the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year to the floor, igniting a full-blown confrontation.

Officials and League Management Under Fire

After the game, both teams made it clear they were frustrated with how the game was managed. Fever head coach Stephanie White didn’t mince words in her postgame comments:

“Bad officiating is a league-wide issue,” she said. “Everybody (in the WNBA) is getting better, except the officials… We knew this was going to happen.”

Her concerns echoed those of many fans and analysts, who had criticized the league for allowing physical play against Caitlin Clark to go unchecked in recent weeks. Tuesday night’s incident only amplified calls for stricter officiating and league accountability.

A Critical Moment for the WNBA

The WNBA has seen record-breaking ratings since Clark entered the league, and games featuring the Indiana star have drawn millions of viewers. With growing fan interest and heightened scrutiny, how the league handles these altercations could significantly impact its public image.

Whether this latest response will satisfy fans and players remains to be seen. But for now, the league has at least acknowledged the foul play with stronger action.
