NBA Finals Ends Holmgren-Wemby Comparison

Holmgren’s Finals Expose Wemby Comparison

The 2025 NBA Finals have been electric, but for Chet Holmgren, they’ve been a mixed bag. Despite showing grit, playing through an ankle roll in Game 4 and grabbing 9 points in Game 5. His offensive output has raised serious doubts about where he stands in the long-hyped debate with Victor Wembanyama.

Holmgren has struggled to finish inside and is ice-cold from deep, going just 2-for-11 from beyond the arc in the series so far. While his defensive presence remains valuable, his offensive inconsistencies have limited his overall impact.

Wembanyama’s Dominance Makes Debate Moot

For a while, fans and analysts debated who had the higher ceiling: Holmgren or Wembanyama. Now, that conversation seems settled.

Victor Wembanyama has put up ridiculous numbers

  • 24.3 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 3.8 BPG
  • Focus of San Antonio’s offense and defense
  • League-best rim protection
  • Consistent highlight-reel plays

Meanwhile, Holmgren is at 15.0 PPG, 7.9 RPG, with solid but not elite shooting. His defense is versatile, but Wemby’s all-around dominance puts him in early MVP talks, while Holmgren is still refining his offensive skillset.

Even with both players missing time this season, Wembanyama’s impact per game is clearly greater. Spurs fans, who’ve watched Wemby blossom into the team’s franchise cornerstone, already knew the answer.

What’s Next for Holmgren and OKC?

Let’s be clear: Holmgren’s story isn’t over. At just 23, he’s already playing key minutes on a Finals team and contributing defensively at a high level.

But for him to reach the next tier, he must improve as a scorer, get stronger in the paint, add footwork in the post, and rediscover his shooting stroke.

The Thunder’s young core means there’s still plenty of time, but they need quick adjustments of absolute focus to win the series and bring home their first NBA title.

For now, though, this Finals has simply confirmed what many already believed: Wemby isn’t just ahead of Holmgren, he’s miles apart.
