Craig Kimbrel has found a new home again after leaving the Braves.
Just days after being released by the Atlanta Braves, the franchise’s all-time leader in saves is reportedly joining the Texas Rangers. According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the veteran closer has agreed to a minor league contract with Texas.
The Braves designated Kimbrel for assignment on Saturday, a surprising move that came just one day after his 2025 season debut. Kimbrel had been called up to the majors only two days earlier.
By Monday, the 36-year-old pitcher elected free agency, but his time on the market was brief.
From An Icon to Free Agent
Kimbrel’s return to Atlanta was short-lived but notable. The eight-time All-Star owns the franchise record for saves (186). And his dominance from 2010 to 2014 helped cement his reputation as one of the best closers of his era.
However, his 2025 stint with Atlanta didn’t go as planned. With limited appearances and questions surrounding his velocity and command, the Braves made a quick decision to move on.
What the Rangers Get
By signing Kimbrel to a minor league deal, the Rangers are taking a low-risk gamble on a proven arm with a Hall of Fame resume. If he finds his rhythm in the minors, Kimbrel could add much-needed depth and postseason experience to Texas’s bullpen.
Kimbrel now joins a Rangers organization that’s dealt with its share of bullpen struggles in 2025. While there’s no immediate guarantee he’ll return to MLB action, the door remains wide open for a comeback.
Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the veteran closer can recapture the magic, and make one final run in the big leagues.
