There may be no quarterback controversy yet in Seattle, but Drew Lock is doing everything he can to change that for the Seahawks.
Head coach Mike Macdonald shot down any talk of Sam Darnold losing the starting role, calling the idea “crazy.” But if you were watching Seahawks OTAs this week without knowing jersey numbers, you might assume Lock, wearing No. 2, was the QB1.
Why? Because Drew Lock is balling out.
Lock Outshines Darnold in Early OTA Action
Lock has been sharp, accurate, and aggressive, dropping deep dimes against a Seattle secondary that isn’t exactly soft. While Darnold holds the starting title heading into the 2025 season, Lock is making it tough to ignore his performance.
If this were an open competition, Lock might be leading it. And though that’s not the case, his play is making fans, and maybe even some coaches, quietly wonder if the depth chart could shift if Darnold stumbles.
A Familiar Scenario for Seahawks Fans
In 2023, there were already calls for Lock to replace Geno Smith, especially when Smith struggled midseason. Lock ended up starting twice that year and played better than expected, but not well enough to earn a long-term role.
After a short stint with the New York Giants, Lock returned to Seattle this offseason. Interestingly, he’s now back on a two-year deal, even after the team signed Darnold. That move raised eyebrows, but it’s quickly looking like a smart insurance policy.
Can Darnold Hold His Ground?
Let’s be honest: Sam Darnold has had one good season in his NFL career and that was just last year. He’s now tasked with leading a talented Seahawks squad with playoff potential, thanks to a defense that should keep games competitive.
The big question: Can he replicate his 2024 success? Or was that season a fluke?
Seattle’s offense, under OC Klint Kubiak, is expected to be quarterback-friendly. But if Darnold starts slow, fans won’t be shy about calling for Lock, again.
Jalen Milroe, Seattle’s rookie QB3, isn’t ready to start this year and that’s fine. The job will go to either Darnold or Lock. And right now, Lock is doing everything in his power to prove he’s the better backup, and maybe more.
Final Thought: Drew Lock Is Ready If Called
The hope is that Darnold excels and Seattle cruises into the postseason. But if he falters, Drew Lock’s eye-opening performance in OTAs shows he’s not just a clipboard holder. He’s ready, and maybe even deserving, to take over if needed.
The Seahawks might have quietly made one of their smartest offseason moves by keeping Lock around.
