Caitlin Clark, Fever Labeled ‘Championship Contender’ by WNBA Legend

Caitlin Clark is gearing up for her sophomore WNBA season, and expectations are already sky-high. After a standout rookie campaign, Clark and the Indiana Fever are entering the 2025 season with something they haven’t had in years, legitimate championship buzz.

Former WNBA star and ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo recently called the Fever a “championship contender” in a segment previewing the upcoming season. It’s a big statement, but one that might not be far-fetched considering the talent Indiana has assembled.

“After the moves that Indiana made in free agency, I think this is a team that’s a championship contender,” Lobo said. “They brought back their big three from a year ago. Of course, Caitlin Clark had a monster year, Aliyah Boston as well, Kelsey Mitchell. And then all of the pieces that they added in free agency.”

Fever Could Make Championship Run During 2025 WNBA Season

Clark will continue to be the face of the franchise, but she’s far from alone. Aliyah Boston remains one of the league’s best young bigs, and Kelsey Mitchell offers veteran leadership with consistent scoring. What sets the Fever apart this year is their active offseason.

The additions of DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard bring championship experience, length, and versatility. Bonner is a proven scorer with a clutch gene, while Howard offers elite defense and floor spacing. Sophie Cunningham, known for her toughness and shooting, adds further depth and grit.

With these signings, Indiana can now rotate through multiple lineups that balance size, speed, and shooting. The Fever’s front office clearly recognized the need to surround Clark and Boston with seasoned talent, and the pieces seem to be falling into place.

But potential only takes you so far. For Indiana to truly contend, Clark and Boston will need to elevate their games further. Clark, in particular, will have to navigate tighter defensive schemes and higher expectations in her second year. Still, all signs suggest she’s ready for that challenge.

The Fever kick off their 2025 campaign this Saturday at 3 PM EST, hosting the Chicago Sky in what should be a thrilling opener. The team now finds itself in the same breath as powerhouses like the Las Vegas Aces, New York Liberty, and Minnesota Lynx and if all goes well, they may just prove they belong.
