Will NFL Players Join the 2028 Olympic Flag Football Team?

Flag football is making its Olympic debut in 2028, and NFL stars may be suiting up for Team USA. A new league resolution is in the works, and it could change everything.

At next week’s spring meetings, NFL owners are expected to discuss a proposal that would allow one player per team to take part in the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles. The plan also includes a provision for each club’s international player to represent their home country.

According to NFL.com, the resolution highlights the league’s commitment to “supporting the growth of flag football both domestically and internationally.” With football’s global popularity rising, this move could bring even more attention to the sport on the world stage.

Safety and Salary Cap Protections in Place

One major concern has been player safety. To address that, the proposal includes injury protection and salary cap credit for any player hurt while competing in Olympic flag football. It also sets minimum standards for medical staff and field conditions, ensuring a safe playing environment.

The inclusion of both men’s and women’s divisions in Olympic flag football adds to the momentum behind this new sport. The hope is to not only showcase elite athletes but also help grow flag football internationally, something the NFL has pushed for in recent years.

NFL Stars Ready to Represent Team USA

Several top NFL players have already shown interest in playing. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke about the Olympics at a press conference in Frankfurt back in 2023.

“I definitely want to,” Mahomes said. “Football is a great game that has given me so much, and I want to make sure everyone gets the same experience that I got growing up.”

He’s not alone. Other big names like Tyreek Hill, Mike Evans, and Micah Parsons have all expressed excitement about the idea of competing.

If the resolution passes, fans could witness a dream roster of NFL superstars representing the United States in Olympic flag football. It would not only raise the sport’s global profile but also give football fans a new reason to tune in.

The final decision is still pending, but all signs point to a strong push from the NFL to make this vision a reality. If it happens, the 2028 Olympics could feature a historic team made up of some of the NFL’s biggest names.
