The Man Behind the Fade: Meet Jules Guiterrez, Jayson Tatum’s Longtime Barber and Family Fixture

Before Jayson Tatum became a six-time NBA All-Star and the face of the Boston Celtics, he was just a kid in St. Louis looking for the perfect haircut. That search led him to Jules Guiterrez, a Dominican-born barber from New York who had relocated to Missouri. What started as a simple trim evolved into a lifelong bond that’s seen Guiterrez become more than just a barber; he’s family

“Jules has been cutting my hair since I was 11,” Tatum shared in an interview on April 19 “So, he’s more like family now. He’s basically integrated into our family.”

From Group Homes to NBA Locker Rooms

Guiterrez’s journey to becoming Tatum’s trusted barber is as compelling as any underdog story. Raised in Yonkers, New York, he spent part of his youth in group homes, where he discovered a passion for cutting hair. Armed with a pair of clippers and an eye for detail, he honed his craft by offering haircuts to fellow residents and staff.

“Cutting hair was what pulled me out of it,” Guiterrez reflected. “I was fortunate.”

His skills eventually led him to St. Louis, where he built a reputation for precision cuts and unique designs, attracting clients like former NBA star Larry Hughes and rapper Chingy. It was here that he met a young Jayson Tatum, introduced by Tatum’s father, Justin

A Bond Beyond the Barber Chair

Tatum’s initial skepticism about Gutierrez faded quickly after receiving compliments on his fresh look. The two bonded over shared interests, including a love for gladiator movies often playing in the barbershop. As Tatum’s basketball career soared, from Chaminade College Prep to Duke University and eventually the NBA, Gutierrez remained a constant presence

Even when Tatum moved to Boston, Guiterrez would fly in regularly to ensure his client’s fade remained flawless. He also traveled to key games during Tatum’s college years, overcoming a fear of flying to support him

“When I raised my prices, you lose a lot of people. Jayson never folded. He was at that shop every other week,” Guiterrez recalled.

More Than Just a Haircut

Guiterrez’s role in Tatum’s life extends beyond grooming. He’s been a supportive figure through the highs and lows of Tatum’s career, including the Celtics’ 2025 championship run and the recent setback of Tatum’s season-ending Achilles injury.

“Praying for the best,” Guiterrez Shared following the injury.

Their relationship exemplifies the profound impact that mentors and supporters can have on an athlete’s journey. Guiterrez isn’t just maintaining Tatum’s appearance; he’s been a steady presence, offering guidance and friendship through every twist and turn.
