The Dallas Mavericks continue to dominate the news cycle, even after being eliminated from contention for the 2025 NBA Championship. On Monday night, they made waves once again, winning the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Despite holding just a 1.8% chance in the lottery.
It was a stroke of luck that couldn’t have come at a better time for Dallas.
Cooper Flagg Expected to Go No. 1
All signs now point toward Cooper Flagg, the dynamic forward from Duke, being selected first overall. Flagg has been the most talked-about American prospect in years thanks to his high basketball IQ, elite defense, and offensive polish. Many believe he could be a franchise-changing player and in Dallas, that hope couldn’t be more welcome.
When former NBA center Kendrick Perkins asked Flagg how he felt about possibly becoming the Mavericks’ long-sought two-way star, Flagg kept things grounded and confident.
“Yeah, I mean, like I said, this entire experience for me has been amazing,” Flagg said via NBA on ESPN. “So going forward, I’m just going to look forward to that. Like you said, being a two-way player, that’s something that I’ve done since I was a little kid. So I’m just going to try and keep doing that to the best of my ability.”
A Calming Sign After Luka’s Exit
The win couldn’t have come at a better time for Mavs Nation. Especially following the shock and disappointment of Luka Dončić’s blockbuster trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. Fans were understandably furious. Dončić had been the face of the franchise for years, and losing him left a gaping hole in the team’s identity.
But now, with Flagg likely to step into that void, fans may find new reason to believe. Former Warriors GM Bob Myers, echoing the excitement, asked Flagg if he had seen this coming. Flagg kept his cool.
“I didn’t try to think about it too much,” Flagg responded. “I feel like it’s kind of out of my control. I’m just going through the process like everybody else and just trying to enjoy every single moment because we only get to do this once.”

During his lone season at Duke, Cooper Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks across 37 games. He showed he could excel on both ends of the floor, making him the type of versatile player modern NBA teams crave.
Whether or not he can immediately fill Luka’s shoes remains to be seen. But the Mavericks’ future suddenly looks much brighter. And for fans still processing the pain of the Dončić trade, Cooper Flagg might be just the fresh start Dallas needs.
