Overrated Without Kelce? NFL Fans Debate Patrick Mahomes’ Legacy

Patrick Mahomes is already an NFL legend. He’s racked up two MVPs, three Super Bowl appearances, and a highlight reel that keeps growing. But a growing debate is casting a shadow over his greatness: Is Patrick Mahomes overrated without Travis Kelce?

As Mahomes continues to lead the Kansas City Chiefs into another era of contention, some fans and analysts are questioning how much of his success is tied to his longtime teammate, and whether he’d be the same quarterback without him.

Mahomes’ Numbers Without Kelce Raise Eyebrows

It’s no secret that Travis Kelce is Mahomes’ go-to weapon. The two have shared an incredible connection since Mahomes became the Chiefs’ starter. But when Kelce is injured or unavailable, the offense looks different — and not in a good way.

In 2023, Mahomes posted his fewest passing yards and most interceptions since taking over as starter. That’s not something to walk over for someone like Mahomes. So, what could have gone wrong? Kelce missed time that season, and the results were noticeable. The offense stalled. Mahomes struggled with timing and accuracy. The eye test, and the stats told a clear story.

Is Patrick Mahomes Carrying the Offense — or Is Kelce Carrying Him?

Kelce isn’t just a top tight end — he might be the best to ever play the position. His ability to find space, dominate in the red zone, and make clutch catches has saved the Chiefs countless times.

Without Kelce on the field, Mahomes has shown signs of discomfort. He’s held the ball too long, forced risky throws, and looked far less decisive. The chemistry between the two is irreplaceable — and without it, Mahomes seems human.

It’s Okay to Be Great — But Not Untouchable

To be clear, this does not mean that Patrick Mahomes is still not one of the top quarterbacks in the league. But the Patrick Mahomes overrated argument has a valid point if his greatness depends on one future Hall of Famer.

Other great quarterbacks have thrived despite changes around them. Tom Brady won without Gronk. Peyton Manning lit up defenses with rotating weapons. Can Mahomes do the same if Kelce retires or declines?

Until he consistently dominates without his safety blanket, the questions will linger. Is Patrick Mahomes a generational quarterback on his own — or has he just made the most of having a generational weapon?
