10 NFL Coaches Hired for Vibes, Not Wins

Sometimes, NFL teams go deep into analytics, coaching trees, and championship pedigrees when hiring a head coach. Other times, they just go with a guy who seems like he’d be cool to hang out with.

These hires weren’t necessarily about building a dynasty or implementing a revolutionary scheme. They were about energy, buzz, and crossing fingers that it would all somehow work out.

The Cardinals hired Kliff after he got fired from a middling college team, purely because he looked like a GQ model who might run a fun offense. The results were… very Arizona.

9. Nathaniel Hackett

Hackett got hired by the Broncos after helping Aaron Rodgers win MVP, which is like giving someone a raise for standing next to a campfire. His coaching debut was a weekly panic attack.

8. Jim Tomsula

Tomsula was promoted from within by the 49ers because the players liked him and he had a mustache that said “union pipefitter”. Unfortunately, vibes don’t win games—especially when you’re wildly underqualified.

7. Freddie Kitchens

Freddie went from position coach to head coach in the blink of a Baker Mayfield eyebrow raise. The Browns wanted continuity and got chaos.

6. Joe Judge

Judge talked tough and gave big Bill Belichick energy in the interview room. Then he started running QB sneaks on 3rd and long, and the vibes quickly soured.

5. Jeff Saturday

Saturday was plucked from ESPN like he was a fan contest winner. The Colts didn’t need a real coaching search—they needed someone with “leadership” and a headset. Good thing that experiment didn’t last long.

4. Dan Campbell (Early Hire Days)

Dan Campbell is now a legit motivator, but when he first showed up biting kneecaps in press conferences, it felt like the Lions hired a linebacker on Red Bull. Thankfully, the vibes actually evolved into wins.

3. Urban Meyer

Urban came to the NFL with big college swagger and zero professional awareness. The Jaguars thought they were getting a culture builder, but they accidentally started a reality show.

Rex was all personality, trash talk, and toe-related drama. He could coach a defense, sure, but the Jets mostly hired him to light up microphones.

McDaniel has become a solid coach, but his original hire felt like a team choosing their favorite Reddit moderator. Quirky, funny, and smart, he brought Silicon Valley energy to South Beach.
