The 13 Most Overrated Franchises in All of Sports

Let’s face it, not all sports franchises live up to the hype surrounding them. Some organizations are lauded for their past, resources, or star power — yet when it comes to delivering results, they consistently fall short. So, with that, let’s rank the most overrated franchises in all of sports.

There’s no question the Mets have a loyal fanbase and play in the media capital of the world, but their history is riddled with missed opportunities. Despite their two World Series wins, the franchise has often been overshadowed by their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees.

The Cleveland Browns have a storied history, but it’s mostly from the pre-Super Bowl era. But, since then, the franchise has been synonymous with mediocrity and draft busts.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs have such a rich history, but their last Stanley Cup victory came in 1967. In fact, decades of playoff disappointments have made their lofty reputation feel undeserved.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Openverse

Notre Dame’s legacy is undeniable, but the team’s modern-day relevance is questionable. And, while they command national attention, they often fall short in marquee bowl games and the College Football Playoff. Sorry, Fighting Irish fans!

New York Knicks

Washington Commanders

This franchise once enjoyed complete NFL dominance in the 1980s and early 1990s. However, the past three decades have been marred by poor ownership. In their defense, it does look like things are turning around for the franchise, thanks to the arrival of quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Dallas Cowboys

Known as “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys have a massive following and a wealth of resources. However, their playoff success has been minimal since their 1990s dynasty. They talk a big game, but the truth is they’ve been mediocre for almost 30 years.

Paris Saint-Germain

Openverse

PSG has dominated Ligue 1 thanks to its financial backing and star-studded rosters, but they’ve yet to win the Champions League despite their resources.

Chicago Cubs

Openverse

The Chicago Cubs broke their infamous 108-year championship drought in 2016, but their reputation as “lovable losers” often masked decades of ineptitude.

Openverse

The New York Yankees have won a whopping 27 World Series titles, which is incredible. However, their last championship was in 2009. Yes, they did make the World Series this year, but for a team that is so iconic (and with so much money), they should be winning titles more consistently.
