10 Feminist Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

Sometimes you watch a horror movie and think “good for her!” Read on find out if your favorite feminist horror film made the list.

Jennifer’s Body

Jennifers body
20th Century Fox

At first glance, you may wonder how this movie could be feminist since it seems like it was filmed for the male gaze. But it can still be considered a feminist film since she became empowered with succubus powers after being brutally murdered by an ambitious boy band. And before you claim that she is sexist for only eating high school boys, keep in mind that she goes both ways.

Ginger Snaps

Ginger Snaps
Oddbod Productions

You could make an argument that this movie may have inspired the iconic Megan Fox film. Ginger Snaps tells the story of a girl who is slowly turning into a werewolf and how her sister will stop at nothing to save her.

The Craft

The Craft
Columbia Pictures

The Craft may be one of the most iconic films on this list. It tells the story of a group of high school girls who use witchcraft to get what they want. But along the way the power goes to their heads. In the end, the main character gets to keep her power because she refuses to use her magic to hurt people. This film does not portray modern witchcraft in the most accurate light, but it’s a more accurate representation than most witch movies of its time.

Alien

Alien
20th Century-Fox

Alien tells the story of a spaceship crew who investigate an abandoned spaceship. They find that the ship is infested with face hugging aliens called xenomorphs. The main character Ellen Ripley takes command of her crew and tries to enforce the quarantine procedure. But when her entire crew refuses to listen to her and the aliens start attacking the crew, she has to find a way to escape with her life.

Love Witch

The Love Witch
Anna Biller Productions

This film is a problematic fave! The Love Witch follows the story of Elaine Parks, a witch who is obsessed with the idea of love. So obsessed that she uses love magick to seduce men. But her seduction has fatal consequences. Come for the gorgeous set and costume design but stay for the over-the-top acting and subtle feminist satire. You may have to watch this film a few times to catch onto the satire.

Midsommar

Midsommar
A24

Midsommar tells the story of Dani, a girl who had lost her whole family and who is being actively neglected by her boyfriend. In the end Dani becomes empowered by letting her neglectful boyfriend roast inside of a bear suit. That may have been a little extreme but we are just happy she was finally happy at the end. Good for her.

Teeth

Teeth
Roadside Attractions

This is the film that makes all of the men cross their legs when they watch it. Teeth tells the story of a young and naive high school student. After an horrific encounter with a potential love interest, she learns that there is something very different about her anatomy. I won’t spoil too much, just know that she gets revenge on everyone who hurts her or makes her angry.

Carrie

Carrie
Red Bank Films

Carrie tells the story of an overly-anxious girl who is bullied by her classmates and abused by her religiously zealous mother. She ultimately gets revenge on her cruel classmates and evil mother by coming into her own power.

The Witch

The Witch
A24

I know this film is called The Witch. But because of the spelling on the movie poster I always want to call it The Va Vitch! This is probably the darkest and scariest movie on the list. It tells the story of a family who is exiled from their community and tormented by the witch in the woods. The movie is unsettling, but strangely empowering. After losing her community and her family, the oldest comes into her own power by joining a coven of witches who live in the woods.

We all remember George A. Romero’s zombie films. But not many people know that he wrote and directed a witch film.
