Star Wars Action Figure Sets New Record as World’s Most Expensive Toy

A new record has been set for the world’s most expensive action figure. An extremely rare Star Wars Boba Fett figure measuring only 3.75 inches tall was auctioned for $525,000. Plus, we’ll take a look at the previous record holders.

Star Wars Boba Fett Sells for Record-Shattering $525,000

Heritage Auctions announced the sale of an extremely rare Star Wars Boba Fett action figure at over a half million dollars. The massive sum was fetched at a May 31, 2024, Star Wars Signature Auction.

Standing only 3.75 inches tall, the Boba Fett action figure now holds the distinction of being the world’s most valuable vintage toy after going for a record-shattering $525,000. The selling price is more than double that of a similar figure that sold in 2022.

“The rocket-firing Boba Fett action figure long ago became such a mythic icon that people worldwide know about it even if they don’t collect anything at all,” Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said. “We knew this one had a chance to enter the record books, and it was thrilling to see it become the most valuable toy in the world.”

The Boba Fett action figure is hand-painted. The Bounty Hunter is one of only two surviving examples of this line of Star Wars toys made by Kenner in the 1970s. What makes it rare is that the Boba Fett figures were pulled from the production line before making it to market.

Before the auction, the 1979 figure had been valued at around $204,435.

The World’s 6 Other Most Expensive Action Figures

Here is a list of the runners-up for the record of most expensive action figures ever sold.

2. Barbie With 1-Carat Pink Diamond: $302,500

In 2010, a Barbie doll bedazzled with a 1-carat pink diamond in the center, as well as three carats of white diamonds, fetched $302,500 at a Christie’s Americas auction in Manhattan. The doll was designed by Stefano Canturi, an Australian jeweler. All proceeds from the sale went to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

3. Star Wars Rocket-Firing Boba Fett Action Figure: $236,000

This is another of the same type of miniature Mandalorian rocket-firing Boba Fett action figure as the new record holder. This one sold in an auction in June 2022, realizing $236,000.

4. Handmade G.I. Joe Action Figure: $200,000

This G.I. Joe handmade action figure was created in 1963 by Hasbro as a prototype for its now-famous action figures that have sold more than 370 million. In 2003, Stephen Geppi, a comic book distributor, purchased the figure for $200,000.

5. Boba Fett Toy: $84,375

Designated by Heritage Auctions as ‘Star Wars Boba Fett 21 Back B AFA 95 MINT,’ this is a different Boba Fett toy that was also sold at the May 31 auction and went for $84,375. This toy was released in 1979. The figure was still sealed in its original packaging, which features a large card backing with illustrations. The Action Figure Authority gave the toy a 95 grade.

6. Rare Obi-Wan Kenobi Action Figure: $65,000

Another valuable action figure from the failed Kenner batch of Star Wars toys is this 1978 figure of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenner stopped production before many were made. When they do show up at auction, many are willing to spend top dollar to obtain one. The most recent was sold at a Hake’s auction in 2018 for $65,000.

7. Star Wars Droids: VLIX: $60,000

These rare action figures in the Star Wars Droids series were made of the obscure character VLIX by Kenner. The character was featured in a few episodes of the short-running TV show “Star Wars: Droids” but never appeared in a flagship Star Wars film. The show was canceled before Kenner could finish any toys, so they sold the molds to another toymaker named Glasslite. The company made around 2,000 VLIX figures, but Lucasfilm had them destroyed. Luckily a few slipped through the cracks and are now worth thousands.
